Pair claims $100,000 Lady Luck scratch-off prize
A pair of brothers from Frederick County who enjoy pooling their money to buy Maryland Lottery scratch-offs got a late-summer visit from Lady Luck – literally and figuratively. They very nearly missed out on the good fortune she brought, but on the final Friday afternoon of August, they got to celebrate a $100,000 top-prize win.
It’s a position one of them had been in before. The older brother claimed a $100,000 scratch-off prize more than three years ago. However, they almost didn’t get the chance to visit the Lottery’s Winner’s Circle again.
“We had a stack of scratch-offs that I had tossed aside because they weren’t winners,” said the eldest. “I was at the store checking them, just to be sure, and when I scanned this one it said, ‘Cash at Lottery.’ ”
“This one” turned out to be a top-prize-winning Lady Luck ticket, which he purchased at Harris Teeter #324 located at 15501 Annapolis Road in Bowie.
“You have to make sure you check your tickets,” he said, adding that as soon as he realized he was holding a $100,000 winner he called his younger brother. “I said, ‘You’re not going believe this. We’re going to Baltimore.’ ”
Although the younger brother, who is a school employee, claimed the $100,000 prize in his name, the two men plan to share the money. The prize will go to pay bills and into savings. While the elder brother is a scratch-off enthusiast, the younger brother enjoys playing poker and said he’s planning a casino visit.
The $10 Lady Luck ticket launched in July, and seven of its $100,000 top prizes remain unclaimed along with 15 $10,000 prizes and thousands of others ranging from $10 to $1,000. The Prince George’s County retailer is a winner as well. For selling the top-prize winning ticket, Harris Teeter earns a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.
